Human Rights Indaba 2023

The South African High Commission in Namibia, in partnership with the International University of Management (IUM), co-hosted an Indaba/Roundtable on Human Rights in South Africa and Namibia, on Thursday, 23 March 2023, at IUM Dorado Campus, Windhoek.

The event was celebrated under the theme “𝐁𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐦 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐚 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐲”.

The celebration embraced two events in one, being; The South African Human Rights day on the one hand and that of Namibia’s independence on the other.

The Indaba/Roundtable was well attended by, among others, Members of the Parliament, Diplomats and representatives of NGO’s, Lecturers and Students from IUM, NUST and UNAM.

In his welcoming remarks, IUM’s Acting Vice Chancellor, Dr. Aquilinus Nashilundo called on the current and future generations of both South Africa and Namibia, to never ever forget that the strong bond between the two countries was born in the crucible of the struggle for human rights and self-determination of the people of Namibia and South Africa. “Our comradeship was cultivated, nurtured and germinated in the various prisons in South Africa, including on Roben Island; in the trenches of Kongwa in Tanzania, in Zambia, Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe during the bitter armed liberation struggles during which so many of our comrades have sacrifices their precious lives for”, he said.
