On 15 August 2025, IUM hosted its 2025 Entrepreneurship Day under the theme : Igniting Innovation and Sustainable Ventures , which focused on encouraging fresh ideas, showcasing sustainable solutions, fostering connections for growth and celebrating ventures that address economic, social and environmental needs.
The idea of IUM Entrepreneurship Day took root in June 2017, when IUM, with the support of the Wadhwani Foundation and Mount Kenya University, launched a transformative program to train staff in entrepreneurship education. This initiative aimed to instil an entrepreneurial mindset in our students, empowering them to become job creators rather than job seekers.
Since then, the Entrepreneurship Day has become a cornerstone event for our University and the broader community. It promotes creativity and problem-solving, bridges the gap between academia and industry, and offers practical learning opportunities through business pitches, exhibitions and mentorship. Beyond the University, it supports local businesses, stimulates economic growth and fosters innovation that addresses the unique challenges of our community.
In the welcoming address by PVC-Academic Affairs, Research and Innovation, Prof. Charles Makanyeza said , “The entrepreneurship day is designed for all members of the IUM family and beyond, including students from every faculty, academic and administrative staff, alumni, local entrepreneurs, SMEs, corporate partners and community members. Innovation knows no disciplinary boundaries and todays’ gathering reflects the spirit of inclusivity and collaboration.”
This years event was graced by Ms. Veraa Njong, Managing Director of GEN Namibia, whose leadership continues to empower entrepreneurs across Namibia. Throughout the day, students pitched exciting business ideas and showcased innovative products and services, and had opportunity to network with investors and industry leaders.
For our students, this is an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop new skills, access mentorship and build networks that can kickstart their entrepreneurial journeys.
