IUM Strengthens College of Arts (COTA) Lecturers’ Capacity in Assessment and Evaluation

The International University of Management (IUM), through its School of Secondary and Postgraduate Education, conducted a one-day training workshop on Assessment and Evaluation in Tertiary Education for lecturers and Heads of Department at the College of the Arts (COTA) in Windhoek on 28 September 2025.

The workshop, facilitated by Dr. Silohenda Amuthenu, Dr. Alpha Ndeunyema, Dr. Fredrick Simasiku, and Mr. Charles George, aimed to enhance the capacity of COTA academic staff in designing effective assessment strategies and promoting academic integrity in higher education.

This initiative formed part of IUM’s community engagement programme and was offered on a pro bono basis as part of the University’s education outreach activities beyond campus. It reflects IUM’s ongoing commitment to national educational development and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), which promotes lifelong learning and equitable access to quality education.

The training covered key areas such as the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy, constructive alignment, performance-based assessment, moderation, and the integration of technology in assessment practices. Participants also explored the application of Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) level descriptors and best practices in continuous assessment and feedback.

The highly interactive workshop included group activities, case studies, and practical exercises. Twenty-eight COTA staff members participated actively and commended IUM for the relevance and practicality of the content. Participants received certificates of attendance facilitated through IUM’s Centre for Institutional Improved Performance (CIIP).

Dr. Amuthenu, the Dean of Secondary and Postgraduate Education  noted that such collaborations exemplify IUM’s dedication to strengthening the higher education sector through knowledge sharing and institutional partnerships.

The workshop concluded with a shared commitment from both institutions to continue fostering capacity-building initiatives that enhance teaching, learning, and assessment quality in tertiary education.
