ABOUT CLC
The IUM Centre for Languages and Communication (CLC) welcomes you. The CLC serves as the central hub for all students as they engage in their pursuit of university core modules encompassing languages and communication.
Our main objective is to improve the communication and English language proficiency of students at all academic levels. Additionally, we are strongly committed to supporting the University’s internationalisation initiatives.
The Centre consists of the following departments:
- English Language Education
- Indigenous and Foreign Languages
- Writing Unit
The Department of English Language Education offers core English and communication skills courses across faculties, including Academic Writing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and English as a major for future teachers.
The Department of Indigenous and Foreign Languages provides key modules in Indigenous, French, and German, fostering cultural understanding and multilingual competence for educational, academic, business, and diplomatic contexts.
The Writing Unit offers a range of personalised support services—including one-on-one consultations, engaging workshops, peer mentorship, and online resources—to help students express their ideas clearly and with academic integrity.

It is my pleasure to extend a warm and sincere welcome to you on behalf of IUM Centre for Languages and Communication. At CLC, we play a central role in empowering IUM students across all faculties with critical language and communication skills that are essential for academic, professional, and global engagement.

International University of Management (IUM)
Director’s Biography
Dr Frieda Nanyeni-Kanyemba is the Director of the Centre for Languages and Communication at the International University of Management (IUM), where she has served since 2017. She began her journey at IUM as a lecturer in the Department of Languages and Communication and has played a pivotal role in advancing English language teaching across all Faculties.
Before joining IUM, Dr Nanyeni-Kanyemba taught English as both a First and Second Language at Academia Secondary School in Windhoek, where she also served as Subject Head. Her secondary school teaching experience, leadership, and coordination roles helped shape her deep commitment to language education and student development.
She has also lectured at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) and currently serves as an external moderator for English language education courses at the University of Namibia (UNAM).
Dr Nanyeni-Kanyemba holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric Studies and a Certificate in Copy-editing and Proofreading both from the University of Cape Town (UCT), as well as a Master’s Degree in English and Bachelor Honours degrees in English and Education from the University of Namibia and NUST.
Her research interests include Rhetoric, English Language, Communication, Politics, and Law, with a particular focus on how language shapes thought, persuasion, and public discourse in academic and sociopolitical contexts.
