AASU Awards IUM Founder and Council Chair, Hon. Prof. David Richard Namwandi

On August 4, 2024, during the 3rd AASU Weldios University Symposium in Windhoek, Namibia, the African Association of Students Union (AASU) awarded Hon. Prof. David Richard Namwandi with the honour of “ The Instrument of Commendation ”. The prestigious accolade “ recognises Prof. Namwandi’s stellar contributions to corporate leadership, expanding educational access, and empowering Africa’s youth of which his visionary efforts have set a new benchmark for excellence, driving a transformative era of opportunity and progress for future generations ”.

Presenting the Award to Prof. Namwandi, H.E. Osisioogu Osikenyi E, President of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU), among others, praised him for establishing the David Namwandi Trust (DNT) , which supports students in launching their own businesses. “This effort, exemplifies the DNT’s commitment in nurturing entrepreneurial skills and promoting economic self-reliance. By addressing unemployment and encouraging self-sufficiency, the DNT empowers students to create their own opportunities“, he said.

H.E. Osikenyi E, further expressed profound admiration for IUM’s achievements. He highlighted the university’s impressive growth, now serving over 19,000 students across more than four campuses throughout Namibia. The expansion highlights IUM’s dedication to delivering high-quality education. The exceptional skills and professionalism of IUM’s graduates left a lasting impression.

The AASU also recognised the potential benefits of IUM’s programmes to Nigerian students. To advance this goal, the AASU proposed that its members and students across Africa act as brand ambassadors for IUM. This initiative aims to enhance the visibility of IUM’s vision and programmes and to advocate for education tourism within Africa. As European education costs rise, IUM offers a high-quality, affordable alternative.

Furthermore, the AASU acknowledged the crucial role of Namibia’s private sector in supporting government efforts, viewing this collaboration as a model for other African nations. The synergy between the private and public sectors has been vital for Namibia’s economic stability and growth.
In response, Prof. Namwandi thanked the AASU for the honour of the award which he regarded as an Award to IUM and its Management, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Damian Mwandemele. Prof Namwandi expressed his gratitude to AASU for their tireless efforts in addressing student issues especially those related to university entry. He emphasized the importance of tackling student and on a broader note, youth challenges for a sustainable future.

In conclusion, AASU affirmed the crucial role of universities in driving educational progress across Africa. The dynamic discussions highlighted the need for regional collaboration, promotion of education tourism, and support for entrepreneurial initiatives. The visit reaffirmed the importance of supporting and recognising African institutions like IUM, which are integral to the continent’s progress.
