As I look around and see so many esteemed individuals gathered here today my heart is filled with immense gratitude and I wish to, from the depths of my heart, humbly say: thank you, thank you for being with us on this remarkable day. On 09th August 2022 we were all here witnessing the groundbreaking ceremony, this is exactly 2 (two) years and 7 (seven) months ago.

Today marks yet another milestone – success upon success, against the tide and serious obstacles, who could have ever imagined that a humble, local dream could develop into a major force to be reckoned with both nationally and internationally? In an institution with state-of-the-art infrastructure, all this with zero public seed capital or international donor injection.
It was a tedious journey but eventually we saw the light at the end of the tunnel. But what is it that made this journey so unique? The answer is: when God says “Yes”, no one can say “No”. It therefore goes without saying that the victory of this humble vision had already been proclaimed right from its inception. Many people here were witnesses to just how rough the journey was and equally witnessed the many miracles along the wayay. There were times when nobody would have wanted to be associated with us. Ironically, today, everyone wants to be seen as having contributed to any success that has been scored by IUM – and that is ok with us. The adage “success is the father of everyone while failure is an orphan” is real!
I would, however, like to say that we are aware that not everyone is happy with the trajectory that IUM is moving in, and they would do anything to stop it. To those who are irked by our existence we have this to say, the Almighty God is on our side and He will continue to vindicate us. The institution will continue to fulfil its vision for future generations of this beautiful nation and beyond.
While at this point, director of proceedings, let me genuinely and sincerely thank the following people who have left an indelible mark in the history of IUM:
- Martha Nakangombe née Sheehama, our first student. No – one will take this away from you – you are a trend setter and it will always be well with you.
- The government of our republic, parents and guardians will remain forever indebted to you.
- I would like to single out one person H.E. Hifikepunye Pohamba, who stood by us when knives were out for IUM in 2003/2004. His moral support signalled IUM`s success which we are enjoying today. May I hasten to say that IUM
has received support and encouragement from people of good will all over Namibia and beyond but what we received from Pohomba was unique and vital. He remains a true friend of this fine University. We shall continue to pray and
wish you heavenly favour today, tomorrow and forever! - Anna Nghipangelwa – this lady is amazing. During a fundraising event held at hotel Furstenhof around 2004 –this event was poorly attended. I remember that we did not attract more than 20 people. The total amount raised did
not even exceed N$5,000.00. Surprisingly it was during this very event when a young woman raised her hand and pledged computers and books worth N$10.5 million. We could not believe it as it sounded too good to be true. She
sourced this donation from a company she represented in Namibia then International Foundation For Education and Self Help (IFESH). As I always maintain, God forgives all sins but those who are ungrateful. Muito o brigado Anna,
may the Good Lord continue to bless you.
Director of proceedings, let me now turn to the reason why we are here today. This is a celebration of the completion of the construction of the IUM modern infrastructure for the Eenhana community. This state-of-the-art campus valued at N$45 million is entirely a gift from IUM to the people of this region, the entire nation and the global village at large. Various job and market related programmes are lined up and are already on offer at this campus since January 2025. This campus has now brought the total number of IUM campuses to 5 (five) being, Windhoek (Dorado), Walvis Bay –Coastal Campus, Nkurenkuru, Ongwediva – northern campus and Eenhana. Windhoek, being the main campus, also has two satellite branches in the CBD. The aim of decentralization, if you like, is to make education accessible to all our people at an affordable rate –in short, taking education to the doorsteps of our citizens.
From an economic perspective, local access to quality education will reduce the financial and social burdens associated with mobility for higher learning, ensuring that more young people remain within their communities while still attaining world-class education. This retention of talent will help build a sustainable knowledge economy, bridging the gap between urban and rural educational opportunities.
Moreover, the presence of this campus will act as a catalyst for economic growth. By generating demand for local goods and services–from infrastructure development to retail and hospitality–the campus will stimulate economic activity, create employment, and empower communities. Faculty members, administrative staff, and support personnel will contribute to a vibrant new labor market, directly reducing unemployment, particularly among the youth.
Beyond education, this institution will serve as a breeding ground for industry-relevant skills, equipping students with the expertise needed to drive economic growth and innovation. It will also attract investment, as businesses and industries gravitate toward regions with an educated and skilled workforce. This partnership between academia, industry, and government will foster research, technological advancement, and entrepreneurial growth, all of which are essential for Namibia’s economic progress.
As a nation, we must also rethink our dependence on external aid. Namibia’s future must be built on self-reliance, homegrown solutions, and locally driven innovation. I urge all Namibians to support our economy, invest in local industries, and champion our own potential.
To our esteemed alumni, I wish to say this, you are more than just graduates – you are part of the IUM family. Your journey with us did not end at graduation; it continues. Do not stand alone as economic orphans. Let us unite, collaborate, and build something extraordinary together. Your success is our success, and we are committed to supporting you as you continue to grow and contribute to our nation’s prosperity.
In conclusion, I wish to thank all our students and their parents and guardians who have entrusted us to mould and equip skills to the future leaders of this great nation. I urge our students to take care of this facility, treat it with a sense of ownership so that it can serve you and those who will come after you.To all our stakeholders, may we all hold hands to take education to the next level.
I thank you.
