Qualification description:
The Master of Education – Educational Leadership, Management and Policy Education emphasis is on developing an enhancing leadership capacity in potential and current leaders in order to provide them with the managerial and leadership skills necessary in the ever-changing field of education. The qualification develops an educator’s capacity for conducting research and producing a dissertation in order to demonstrate mastery of a specialized area of knowledge within education leadership, management, and policy. Its goal is to combine academic inquiry with professional relevance. To train educators for dynamic leadership and management positions in driving revolutionary change in education, it employs cutting-edge leadership and management models. Through effective leadership and administration at all stages of the educational process fosters improvement and promote success for schools in challenging circumstances.
The qualification includes among others courses that acknowledge the global context of leadership and management, including Comparative Education and Strategic and Finance Management. It is a course that should empower and encourage educators to tackle education sector challenges by providing sound leadership, management and policy implementation. The qualification offers educators the opportunity to undertake a general study of the theory and practice of educational leadership, management and policy.
The aim and purpose of this qualification is to train professionals who are seeking to broaden their knowledge in the field educational leadership and management in order to manage public and private organisations. The qualification can be used as a bridge and foundation to rise to management leadership positions within a range of professional settings both public and private.
The Master of Education – Educational Leadership, Management and Policy is solidly anchored, inter alia, on the following:
- A work-based practical approach to facilitate integration of work-based learning and experience with theories of leadership and management
- Reflective practice including the use of electronic portfolios to facilitate self-assessment of practical leadership and management skills
- A constructivist approach to knowledge and learning that emphasises integration of skills, attitudes, knowledge and experience across courses, and collaboration within a community of learners
The Master in Education – Educational Leadership, Management and Policy is a two year full time postgraduate study leading to NQF Level 10 qualification.
Admission requirements
To be admitted in the Master of Education in Educational Leadership, Management and
Policy, an applicant: Must be in possession of a Bachelor Honours Degree in Education or an equivalent relevant qualification at NQF level 8 with an average of 60% and above.
OR
Must have Bachelor Honours Degree in Education or an equivalent relevant qualification at NQF level 8 with a minimum of two years teaching experience. The above criteria reflect the minimum admission requirements into the programme. The Faculty reserves the right to set extra admission criteria into the programme as can be determined and approved by the IUM Senate.
