Description of the Qualification

This degree is intended to give deserving students from IUM and other universities who have successfully completed Master’s Degree programmes in a variety of fields related to ecotourism and protected areas management and who meet the requirements for admission to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ecotourism and Protected Areas Management the opportunity to further their education. In order to give a thorough grasp of the interplay between natural and social systems, this qualification contains a set of demanding core requirements in the social and natural sciences. Additionally, the course gives students the freedom to do in-depth study in a wide range of crucial policy subjects.

Admission/Entry requirements

To be admitted to this qualification, a student would normally be required to be in possession of a Masters’ in Ecotourism and Protected Areas Management or equivalent qualification at NQF Level 9.

The holder of this qualification may work as a Conservationist, Protected Area Manager, Research Assistant, Environmental Health Supervisor, Tour Guide, Project Manager, Environmental Campaigner/Lobbyist, Cultural Ambassador, Game ranger, Tour operator, Service Agent, Natural Resource Manager and Wildlife and Parks Manager / Administrator. Employment opportunities may be found in the following public and private entities such as Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism; Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources; Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and SME Development (a subsection on environmental related); Ministry of Higher Education (subsection on research); Namibia Commission of Research, Science and Technology; International University of Management; UNAM; NUST;UNDP; Environmental Investment Fund; CUVECOM; OKACOM; KAZ; WWF; Mines; Municipalities and local authorities; and many organizations both locally and internationally. Important of all opportunities is research and consultancy.
