SECOND ANNUAL DAVID NAMWANDI TRUST HALF MARATHON HELD IN WINDHOEK

The second edition of the David Namwandi Trust half Marathon took place over the weekend, Saturday morning, 8 June 2024, at the IUM Main Campus in Windhoek.

More than 450 runners across all 14 regions of Namibia participated in the two race categories namely the 10KM for High School Learners and 21KM for University and College Students.

The runners started off at the Main Campus entrance onto Hendrik Witbooi drive to Sam Nuyoma drive heading in a western direction towards Daan Virjoen Game reserve and back.

With participants hailing from all 14 regions of Namibia, this event radiated inclusivity and a shared commitment to uplifting the future generation. Spearheaded by the David Namwandi Trust and organized in collaboration with the IUM Alumni Association, the event garnered significant support from both corporate entities and individuals, reflecting the widespread recognition of its noble cause. Notable sponsors included:

  • IUM Alumni Association: Sponsoring over NAD 300,000
  • Chicco, IUM Alumnus and Businessman: Contributing a cow and NAD 20,000
  • Retirement Investments and Savings for Everyone (RISE): Donating NAD 30,000
  • Coca-Cola: Providing beverages for the entire event

The event unfolded with an air of camaraderie and determination, as participants braved the brisk morning to partake in the marathon. In the highly competitive 10km races, winners emerged from both high school and university divisions, showcasing exceptional talent and athleticism.

All runners received certificates of participation and medals were handed to the top 70 in the 10KM category and top 30 in the 21KM category. Top Performers in each category received cash rewards of NAD 5000.00 for the first place, NAD 2500.00 for the second place and the third place winner received NAD 1500.00.

Notably, runners from the Omusati Region dominated the prize winnings, underscoring the depth of talent across Namibia.

The David Namwandi Trust Half Marathon 2024 – 2nd Edition stands as a testament to the power of collective action and philanthropy in fostering positive change. Beyond its sporting achievements, this event symbolized unity, compassion, and the unwavering commitment to nurturing the future generation. As plans are laid for future editions, the legacy of this marathon will endure, continuing to inspire and uplift communities across Namibia.
