IUM is currently accepting applications for the pioneer class of 2025. The official opening of classes as set in the IUM Calendar is for the 12 February 2025. This also coincides with the University of Zimbabwe academic year and Calendar for 2025. The proposed courses will initially benefit approximately 10-15 Namibian medical practitioners, which for the Diploma qualification will be one calendar year of full time studies. The Masters programme also consists of full time academic studies or course work (theory and practice) running over a period of 4 years divided into Part I (year 1 ONLY) and Part II (Years 2-4) with Research and Thesis. In anaesthesiology and Psychiatry, the Diploma Course constitutes Part I of the MMED programme.
Mode of Teaching
For developmental purposes, programming and logistics the first year of the MMED programme and the entire Diploma course will be offered at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare and the Teaching Hospitals. All trainees must successfully complete Part I before embarking in Part II (in the case of MMED) which will be offered in Namibia at the HPCNA approved Teaching Hospitals. Currently HPCNA has accredited Windhoek Central Hospital, Katutura Intermediate Hospital and Oshakati Intermediate Hospitals for the purposes of training and medical specialization. It is for this reason that IUM and the Government of Namibia, through the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MOHS) in 2024, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Additionally, IUM is in discussion with the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) that will create another avenue for the medical specialisation training in General Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics.
Importance of MMED specialisations
Medical specialization is an apprenticeship per excellence. Therefore, Clinical attachment is set to be only at requisite centers, which are well-resourced, particularly with experienced medical professors and experts as well as modern technologies. This is crucial to deliver competent medical specialists. The IUM/UZ graduates will therefore acquire not only contemporary medical and scientific knowledge and advanced practice of medicine, but it will also be attuned to international technological advancement /clinical practices, thereby enabling them to be eligible for practice anywhere in the world. This is of course subject to the regulations applicable to individual countries. In Namibia, IUM will recruit suitable medical Professors and experts to complement MOHSS specialists who will supervise and oversee the local training of the prospective experts. While in Zimbabwe, the Namibian trainees will join the other respective cohorts of specialist trainees at UZ to become one integrated team. It is important to emphasize the UZ has made available a strong team of Medical Professors and experts who will supervise and deliver the necessary education and training in both Harare and that will be on hand to support their counterparts in Namibia as well as supplementing inputs from visiting professors from other partner universities.
Cost Implications
The cost of the split training arrangement is highly competitive, as it will enable Namibia to train 3-4 medical specialists at the price that it currently costs the Government of Namibia to train ONE Medical Specialist outside the country. Moreover, the net cost to the trainee (including transport and subsistence in Zimbabwe) is highly affordable as the two institutions and the respective Governments have capped the expenses at the minimum level. The stakeholders have done this bearing in mind that most trainees will finance the course through out of pocket payments. Moreover, the University of Zimbabwe through its leadership is in the process of identifying safe and affordable accommodation for the Namibian trainees.
